unlock your locker with your iPhone + Apple Watch

your iPhone and Apple Watch are now your employee badge

A mobile credential serves as an authorization token, similar to a corporate or campus ID card or fob, but conveniently stored in your smartphone instead of a physical card. This credential is assigned a unique identification number that functions as an electronic key, granting access to doors equipped with electric locks.

the first smart locker provider to support credentials in Apple Wallet

If you are using an HID mobile credential, your Metramodo smart lockers have Metra with Genuine HID Technology™ readers which includes Apple’s Enhanced Contactless Polling (ECP) application. As the only smart lock provider to offer this application, we are able to support credentials in Apple Wallet.

After your badge is added to Apple Wallet, using your iPhone or Apple Watch, you can unlock your door by holding it near the reader. The device does not need to be awakened or unlocked. It’s that simple.

workplace

As employers transition to mobile credentials, significant efficiencies are gained when replacing plastic cards or FOBs.  Mobile credentials in the form of phone-based IDs result in decreased instances of employee badge loss or forgetting them at home, as evidenced through research.

Whether the mobile credential is in the Apple Wallet, with one of our partner integrations (Sharry or SwiftConnect) in the Apple Wallet or, HID Mobile Access® app our mobile credential reader is embedded, as opposed to a standalone adapted reader. This results in a cleaner and more professional appearance that seamlessly integrates into the overall system.

university

As students on university campuses conduct hundreds of interactions and transactions daily, they expect streamlined and intuitive experiences executed from their smartphones or watches. To meet these expectations, creating a connected campus through technology is no longer optional.

This shift requires mobile credentials for student ID cards to be added to Apple Wallet on iPhones or Apple Watches, providing convenience, cost-effectiveness, and necessary flexibility for universities to ensure the safety of their students and faculty. If students are using their credential for everything else across campus, lockers should also be part of that ecosystem.

The Metra with Genuine HID Technology™ includes Apple’s Enhanced Contactless Polling (ECP) application to support credentials in Apple Wallet.

mobile credential app integrations

No need for smart lockers to stand alone. Make smart lockers part of the mobile credential smart building ecosystem. As the first smart locker of its kind to open locker doors with mobile credentials, this is the perfect pairing.

advantages of mobile credentials for lockers:

security & convenience

Mobile Phones Can’t Be Cloned
Mobile phones are one of the most secure devices and cannot be cloned unlike a keycard.

Next Level: Two-Factor Authentication
It is possible with mobile credentials to enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) so that a user needs secondary security measures in order to use their mobile credentials. Such as, biometrics (or a pin code) to unlock their phone via thumbprint or FaceID.

You are Less Likely To Lose Your Phone
There is one less thing to worry about when your ID is your smartphone. Users are less likely to lose their phone versus a key card, plus they know immediately when that happens.

Immediately Revoke or Reinstate with a Phone
In the event that a phone is lost, the credential is immediately revoked and automatically reinstated when the user logs in from his/her new phone.

smartphones in the wrong hands

Not only do mobile credentials add convenience to the end-users, but the security protection built into the mobile credential system makes them highly secure. Since most people have their entire lives on their smartphones, they will be extremely protective and cautious of them. The technology used to protect user’s private information is next-level secure plus the two-factor authentication adds an extra layer of verification.

we can handle it all — but some solutions are more secure than others

  • Magnetic Stripe Credentials are encoded with information. When it’s swiped through a magnetic stripe reader, the information can be read. There is security by obscurity but no encryption, making it easy for anyone to extract the data.
  • Proximity Credentials use Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. It’s a low frequency, 125 kHz. When in range and tuned to the correct frequency, the hardware can pick up the signal to read the information on the credential. Since proximity technology is not encrypted, this sharing of information can be risky.
  • Smart Technology Credentials use RFID but at a higher frequency, 13.56 MHz, and the data is encrypted. Smart credentials use a microprocessor and encryption algorithm to protect the data when it is transmitted over the air. When a smart credential transmits its data, only hardware with the correct key can provide the right authentication and decrypt the data.
  • Bluetooth is another option for mobile credentials which uses 2.4 GHz, a higher and different frequency. Bluetooth is a common feature in smart phones today. Bluetooth allows for long-distance transmission of the credential, which can be beneficial depending on the application.

the most secure option.

For optimal security, it’s best to choose an option that has high frequency and high encryption, like smart and mobile credential technologies.

make sure to ask questions...
and ask for proof

We have seen too many example of customers buying smart locks that just don’t work with their existing credentials (physical cards, fobs, etc…) much less provide any type of ability to support mobile credentials.  If you are looking at buying RFID locks and your vendor doesn’t ask you about your current cards (format, security), please take that as a red flag.  You should also ask for a video or demo of their locks opening with your credential or the locks opening via bluetooth with a mobile credential.

And please don’t get us started on vendors suggesting that you put stickers on you cards as a viable solution.  You are spending good money and should expect a solution that works — without ridiculous work-arounds.
